Additional statistics
Thank you for the daily posting of COVID-19 data. While it is helpful, I’m always wondering about trends and perspective.
For example, as you point out in footnotes, Confirmed COVID-19 Cases by Day is difficult to interpret because of the variance in reporting. A graph showing a moving average would smooth out the day-to-day variances. Whether it is a 3, 5, or 7-day moving average you could best figure out because you know when have 99% of the the new cases reported for any given day.
Reporting the death rate by age group would also be helpful. Incorporating chronic medical conditions and high-risk group death rates would also be helpful.
A daily estimate of active (contagious) cases would also be helpful. Calculated by subtracting the “total number of cases x number of days ago” from “current total number of cases” where x is the number of days the medical experts believe a COVID positive person is contagious.
All the new statistics could be by zip code also so people Get a feeling for their local risk.
