I never found the answer to my question of how long is the card valid and is it based on a physcal year or a calendar year

The Medical Marijuana cards are valid for one year after they are issued. If you are assigned the card on April 24, 2013, it is valid until April 23, 2014.

    your card is valid for 1 year from the date of issuance you do need to apply for a new card 30 days before it expires
